Introducing Threads, Instagram’s New Rival to Twitter

13 Jul 2023

On July 5, Meta just announced a new app that rivals Twitter called Threads. The app, built by Instagram, allows users to share text posts up to 500 characters long and upload links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes in length.

Since its launch a few days ago, this app has immediately caught the attention of Instagram users. This is shown by the number of users who downloaded this app. In less than 6 hours, Threads has been downloaded by 5 million users.

To use Threads, you can log in with your Instagram username and password, Buddies! You also can follow the same account as on Instagram.

This app is similar to Twitter, but it’s important to know that Threads is a mobile-only platform. Threads can only be accessed via mobile devices, unlike Twitter that can be accessible with desktop.

However, there are many social media users who are still excited about the latest product of Mark Zuckerberg. Scroll down to take a look at everything we should understand about Threads by Instagram.

1. Share your point of view

The launch of Threads allows you to have opinions and discuss comfortably, Buddies! This is aligned with the vision of Threads presented by Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg revealed that the vision for Threads is to create an option and friendly public space for conversation.

2. Tune out the noise

Threads can also allow users to manage who can see your content, reply to you within Threads, or mention you. Accounts blocked on Instagram will also be automatically blocked in Threads. Meta uses the same Community Guidelines as Instagram as an effort to improve users safety.

3. Reach new audiences

Soon, Threads will have updates to support users to reach a new and wider audience. Threads are planning to be compatible with Activity Pub, the open social networking protocol established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). That would make Threads able to connect with other apps, such as Mastodon and WordPress.

The launch of Threads could pose a serious threat to Twitter that first popularized threads. Moreover, Twitter recently has a lot of changes that make its users less comfortable.

Since Elon Musk bought Twitter in October 2022, he has had many controversial policies. Beside changing the requirements of the account verification program, Musk has also recently been caught attention because of his decision to limit on reading tweets.

While many say that Threads will kill Twitter, no one knows for sure that Mark Zuckerberg’s latest app will replace Elon Musk’s platform completely. However, Mark Zuckerberg will continue to update Threads to make it more user-friendly.

As mentioned before, Meta is planning to make Threads compatible with other apps. According to the New York Times, Instagram wants to make it easier for Threads to operate seamlessly with other platforms. This will attract creators and influencers because they don’t have to start all over again.
